1. Old Community Elementary School
The original building is believed to have been erected in the mid-nineteenth century through donations and the voluntary labour of the villagers, at the initiative of the village priests and leading citizens, in cooperation with the Holy Metropolis of Kozani. It was a simple rectangular structure with its entrance on the western side. Around 1870, during the tenure of the teacher Dimos Vasileiou, efforts were made to upgrade the School into an Urban School (higher elementary school). The School’s official seal bears the date 1892 at its center.
From this School evolved many prominent and widely distinguished personalities in the sciences, the Church, and the arts, several of whom also returned to teach at the School. Among them were the philologist and academician Ioannis Tsikopoulos, Dimos Vasileiou, Dimitrios Birdas, Theodoros Papaioannou, Athanasios Nikolaidis, and Georgios Papageorgiou (Ftoichas), among others.
It was also here that Alexis (Giorgis) Zorbas (1865–1941), a native of Katafygi, received his early education. He later became the inspiration for the central character of Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel “Zorba the Greek” (The Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas), and for the film “Zorba the Greek”, directed by Michael Cacoyannis, with music by Mikis Theodorakis and starring Anthony Quinn.
The School building was burned by Nazi German occupation forces in December 1943 and was subsequently repaired through the financial contributions and personal labour of the villagers. During the 1970s and 1980s, it operated as a café. In the early hours of August 26, 1986, the former School was once again destroyed, this time by a fire of unknown circumstances. Later on it was demolished.
2. Katafygio Elementary School
This present-day historic preservation monument, together with its surrounding grounds, belongs to the Local Community of Katafygio in the Municipality of Velventos. It was officially designated as a “protected modern monument” in Government Gazette 221/B/24.04.1985.
The building is a rectangular structure built of stone with a ridged tile roof, erected in the early twentieth century with contributions from the villagers and from emigrants of Katafygio living abroad. Its facades are strictly symmetrical along a central vertical axis, and the building is arranged on two levels: a basement and a raised ground floor. The principal facade faces north, while the entrance is set within a recessed porch, the roof of which is supported by two columns. A marble staircase, flanked on either side by a low built parapet, leads to the main entrance. Around the spacious entrance hall are doors opening into four classrooms, as well as a large hall used for teaching and public events. The School housed an exceptionally rich library, including works by Greek authors published in Leipzig, together with the personal library and numerous manuscripts of the philologist and academician Ioannis Tsikopoulos (1839–1912).
Among those educated here was Metropolitan of Pergamon Ioannis Zizioulas (1931–2023), a native of Katafygio whose theological work and teachings have worldwide recognition. He was elected a member of the Academy of Athens in 1993 and in 2002 he was bestowed the unique honor of being the only cleric to serve as its President. Between 1922 and 1932, Katafygio was also home to a two-grade lower secondary school, whose first headmaster was the philologist Nikolaos I. Oikonomou (1922–1928).
On October 20, 1943, and for the following two days, this building hosted the First Pan-Macedonian Conference of EPON, attended by representatives of EPON youth organizations from Macedonia and Thrace, as well as Metropolitan Joachim Apostolidis of Kozani.
This splendid building was completely burned by the Nazi German occupation forces on December 23, 1943, and its rich and unique library was reduced to ashes.
It was restored through a long and demanding collective effort, with the personal labour of craftsmen and lumber workers from Katafygio, and with the donations from Katafygio natives and expatriates, including members of the “Megas Alexandros” Association of America. The restored building was inaugurated on December 7, 1952. During the 1950s and 1960s it once again served as a school, while in the 1970s it hosted summer children’s camps.
By decision of the Municipal Council of Velventos, no. 129/2010, the building was granted for use to the Katafygio Cultural and Beautification Association “Liacha”, which carries out a wide range of activities here. Traditional costumes and objects from the folk heritage of Katafygio are exhibited on the premises, which also serve as a venue for community and municipal events.
